Thanks Alex. This works great with AXIS!

The devilspie configuration expression I tried is:

(if (contains (application_name) "AXIS") (fullscreen))


This makes AXIS as large as possible and removes the window borders,
but transient windows like the file/open dialog stay above it just
like you'd want.
